About Leather
Leather is a natural product that breathes, is
warm and durable and has individual characteristics, which make each
hide unique. Leather will always bear the marks of its natural origin
and these characteristics can show as scratches, growth marks, areas
of differing fiber density and hair pore structure. These
characteristics in no way detract from the wearing qualities of the
leather. With use, it develops a patina, which enhances its beauty.
Types of Leather
Aniline Leather
Aniline leather is the most natural looking leather with the unique
surface characteristics of the hide remaining visible. Aniline leather
is colored only with dye and not with a surface coating of polymer and
pigment. A light surface coating may be applied to enhance its
appearance and offer slight protection against spillage's and soiling.
Semi-aniline Leather
Semi-aniline leather is more durable than aniline whilst still
retaining a natural appearance. The increased durability is provided
by the application of a light surface coating which contains a small
amount of pigment. This ensures consistent color and imparts some
stain resistance.
Pigmented Leather
Pigmented Leather is the most durable and is used in the majority of
furniture upholstery and almost all car upholstery. The durability is
provided by a polymer surface coating which contains pigments. The
surface coating allows the manufacturer more control over the
properties of the leather, e.g. resistance to scuffing or fading.
Nubuck Leather
Nubuck Leather is actually aniline leather, where the surface has
been brushed and polished and has a velvet like texture with lush
appearance. It is also known as Chaps, Distressed, and Bomber. Like
velvet, the textured surface will show a difference in shading when
you run your hand over it. Nubuck leather should not be confused with
suede or reversed leather.
Ways to identify Nubuck leather
The surface should have a texture similar to velvet. You move your
hand across the surface and if it leaves shading traces similar to the
effect when you vacuum a carpet in one direction and then in another,
it is Nubuck.
Wet your finger and rub it lightly on the surface. The surface will
darken and also will dry to a slightly darker shade.
